How Pets Improve Your Health

Pets are phenomenal life companions that have been proven to improve your health. From common pets like cats and dogs to exotic reptiles or birds, every pet has health benefits.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol
Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than non-pet owners, reducing the risk of heart disease. This is thought to be caused by the calming effects pets have on their owners that help them regulate stress.

Some research suggests people with dogs experience less cardiovascular reactivity during times of stress, improving heart health. In a 20-year study, people who never owned a cat were 40% more likely to die of a heart attack than those who had.

Mental Health
Stroking, hugging, or holding a pet can ease stress and anxiety by elevating levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Additionally, owning a pet can ward off feelings of isolation and loneliness, putting pet owners less at-risk for depression.

If you do struggle with depression, caring for a pet can be a good way to add a sense of purpose and routine to your day. Knowing you have to walk, feed, and otherwise care for your pet can help motivate you and help you feel rewarded, improving your self-esteem.

Fitness
Pets increase the daily opportunities to exercise and socialize. Our animals can be amazing exercise buddies and hold us accountable. Taking our pets on a walk is obviously a great way to get some exercise each day but playing with pets indoors is another way for both of you to move around, spend time together, and strengthen your relationship. Not only are you improving your pet’s health by doing this, but you’re also improving your own!

Strengthen the Immune System
A study found that petting dogs could improve one’s levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that helps protect our gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tracts from infection. A dog’s presence helps to activate your immune system response, which in turn increases your immunity against allergies. Furthermore, spending less time stressed helps ensure our immune system is working as efficiently as possible.
